Election day.

It has been a busy morning today. I got up quite early and my dogs and I took our morning walk. The weather showed signs that it could be rather nice today. not to many dark and big clouds could be seen in the sky.

After that I jumped in to my car and drove to a place called Kinnekulle, just beside the lake Vänern our biggest lake (and Europes third biggest lake). I have friends there that recently sold their house there and will be moving out within weeks. If You like me loves to plant new and perhaps not so hardy plants in Your garden, this is a paradise. They have plants there that shouldn´t survive in this country at all.

The reason they can have these plants (and trees and bushes) is that they live on the mountainside towards the big lake. They are going to move in to the city nearby, but have bought the property just beside their old home and will now build a small cottage there to use as a summer cottage. Well they are retired so they´ll use it all year long to be honest :-) :-)

After the visit I jumped in to my car again and drove homewards. But I continued to drive when I reached the place where I have to turn to come home. It was time to do my duty today. We are having elections to the parliament, the County and Municipal government (I don´t like the word government here but cant really find a better word, but I hope You´ll get what I mean).

In Sweden, like in most parts of Europe, we have rather many parties to choose from. But they have now started to collaborate even before the elections, so it would be more fare to say that we have two blocks to vote on. The middle-conservative block that is the ones that has the power at the moment and the middle-left block that is the opposition at the moment.

We have a tradition here in Sweden to always help those in need so we´ve had a very generous social security net here. This has been miss used quite some time and the government had to make the rules a bit tougher. Unfortunately they made it so tough that dying persons had to start searching for jobs the week before they died!!! They created new laws bur´t didn´t give any guidelines how to interpret them. Time after time they have had to adjust the system to make it less heart less. But I think that would have been done long before the law came to practice! This is what might bring down this government. We don´t like people that kicks people that already is lying down.

The opposition on the other hand has been way after in the polls, until just a couple of days ago when yet another case of kicking people that is lying down reached the news. They want to raise the taxes rather much (the government wants the opposite), especially on gasoline and on people that earns very much. They also wants to restore the social network again. This politics will hit us here on the country side very hard. Politicians seems to have problems with understanding that we must use our cars, because we have no busses going to where we need to go and never on times when we need them :-) :-) Despite the negative effects for us here in the countryside I have just voted for the opposition today.

This is a Gunnera manicata. It might not look impressive but it is actually 2,5 meters high (around 6,6 feet)! It´s a bit smaller this year than usual because it has gotten no fertilizers and very little water during the drought we had here a couple of weeks.

This leaf is 1,5 meter (3,3 feet) wide and it wasn´t the biggest leaf :-) This perennial lives in Brazil as wild and it needs a lot of work to keep it alive during winter here in Sweden. I have tried a hardier, but slightly smaller relative to this one and it did survive one winter. But I killed it during the spring because I removed the protection a bit to early. I live in a much worse zone than this garden is placed in.

There´s also a big risk that we for the first time will have a racist party in our parliament! I would be ashamed to call myself Swedish if that happened. But just a couple of days ago some of our most popular athletes from all kinds of sports begged people not to vote for them. I do hope people will listen to them!

A tiny piece of lake Vänern. If it hadn´t been for those birches we would have seen Läckö castle.

Crocosmia 'Lucifer'. If I should have it I would have to bring it in to my cold cellar during winter.

So now it´s just a long days wait to see the result tonight. They think we all will know around 10:15 tonight if it´s a tight result. Otherwise we´ll know it much earlier.
Have a great day now!

Well, I guess it's too late for me to send you Sarah Palin. She seems very knowledgeable about elder death panels. Maybe she could have lectured for five mins and signed autographs for a fee of course. Pay more and she'll wear a bikini. Such is politics here in the good ole U.S. No one really knows if the Tea Party has any steam or is all smoke. But if they win, this country will step back 200 years and be broke in less than a month. If that's what people want, so be it. Those photos of the big plants all look like elephant ears. What makes them remarkably different as a plant? We have leaves that size everywhere here in the Tropics and they are sturdy enough to withstand a Hurricane force wind. Those don't look like they could. But they are interesting plants to look at. I'm doing an OctoberFarm recipe for dinner tonight because daughter said "surprise me". She loves Salisbury steak and Joyce was good enough to share her recipe. Have you tried it yet?

I hate politics. I just want to tear my hair out thinking about it. Everyone is always so negative here and so busy tearing down their opponent that I'm never really sure what they stand for.
Everytime that I vote, I feel like I'm voting for the lesser of two evils. My brother-in-law rants and raves and lectures about it all the time. Just before elections, I can't stand to even visit their home. He's so negative that usually I just vote for the opposite of what he says!
I hope your elections go the way you hope!
Take care, Cindi

Hi Z&M!
I think even the most right wing conservatives looks upon her as a big joke :-) They would rather die than to have her here, then they really would loose the election :-) :-) :-)

I do hope the Tea party people don´t win anywhere in Yor comming elections. They are dangerous!

It´s special in that way that it can survive here at all. In Brazil i can become much, much bigger. Up to 11 feet high and the leafs can become up to 6 feet wide.

I haven´t tried Jouce recipe but I have eaten them before, my grandmother used to do something similar and I loved it :-)

Have a great day now!

Thank You! I hope so too :-)

Have a great day now!

Good luck with your elections! Politics are always so complicated at times, especially when serious issues are involved...and the good guys dont always win. The good ole U.S. of A. is in such a mess, I wish I could wave my wand and make life better for all, especially the elderly, the uninsured, childrens health and education, environmental issues...yikes the list goes on. I think it better to have a quiet day, eating good cooking, and playing with the dogs!!!!!

Har också varit och röstat idag:) Trodde att vår Gunnera hade strukit med i vinter men den kom faktiskt upp igen om än väldigt sent och i en mindre storlek:) Crocosmian övervintrar utan problem här.Ha det gott/Monne

Hi Robin!
Yes it´s very complicated and the good guys doesn´t always win. It´s the one that can tell the others what he/she wants to do best that wins. Lies or not doesn´t matter I´m afraid. But I will never accept that they kick on people that already si lying dowm as they have done towards the sick over here.

I had a really nice walk in the forest today too :-) I had both sunshine and rain at the same time :-) and later hail started to fall :-) :-)

Have a great day now!

Tjänare Monne!

Här har jag ju zon 4-5, så ingen av dem har någon större chans att klara sig här :-)

Ha en härlig kväll nu!

If you're not going to take Sarah Palin, will have to send you Mickey Mouse because he is the one most often suggested for a write-in candidate. I do hope the election turned out the way you wanted it to but, if not, it's only temporary, right?

Really enjoyed the photos, today. As I have said so many times before, you have a great eye.
BTW, I noticed you're keeping track of my countdown. It's a solar oven I have invented for mainstream cooks and is in the process of being manufactured. The date keeps getting extended because we are in the tweaking stage and want everything to work as expected when presented to the public. It won't be much longer, now, and I'm very excited. Just a little more patience, please.

I really enjoy politics :-) even when it doesn´t go as I hoped like yesterday.

I have a hard time understanding how it can still be that warm over at Yours! I do hope it will turn towards cooler weather soon!
Have a great day now!
Christer.

Hi Sharlene!
Over here it´s Donald Duck :-) :-) He has a party of his own actually :-) Normally he gets around 0,1% of the votes :-) :-) :-)

Yes I´ve been watching there every day too see if You would show the new oven :-)I promise to be a bit more patient :-) :-)

Have a great day now!
